Welcome to Staten Island on the Web!
The following pages provide links to web sites and information for the Borough of Staten Island in New York City. There is also a great deal of original content in our History, Famous Staten Islanders and Books sections. Staten Island is the third-largest borough of New York City (with an area of 60 square miles). It is the least populated of the five boroughs; in 1990 it contained only about 5 percent of the City's population. Staten Island is the most geographically separate of the city's boroughs. We are not connected to Manhattan by any direct tunnel, bridge, or subway. We are connected to Brooklyn by the Verrazanno-Narrows Bridge, and to lower Manhattan by the Staten Island Ferry. Select one of the categories to the right to learn about Staten Island history, recreation, culture and more. Plan your weekend using the Events section. Pictures on each of the subject pages are selected from The New York Public Library's Digital Image Gallery. This gallery contains several hundred historical images of Staten Island. Also, please come visit one of our 12
Branch Libraries located throughout Staten Island. |
