Books: A Treasure! Is Theme for Statewide Initiative for Children and Teens

BROOKLYN, NY -- New York State Librarian Janet Welch today introduced Brooklyn-born magician David Blaine as spokesman for the Statewide 2006 Summer Reading Program, Books: A Treasure!

New York City's three library systems, The New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library, and Queens Library, as well as public libraries throughout the state, present the annual Summer Reading programs whose goal is to make reading activities fun and appealing to young people, thereby continuing their educational growth throughout the summer.

"We are thrilled to have David Blaine as the spokesman for the 2006 New York State Public Library Summer Reading Program," said Ms. Welch, Assistant Commissioner for Libraries and New York State Librarian. " Born and raised in Brooklyn, David is a wonderful example of how children in New York use their public libraries to explore their interests and discover their passions. From Rochester to Rockaway Beach, we believe all children can benefit from this summer's program, which promises to be more exciting than ever before."

Public libraries throughout the state will begin their Summer Reading programs at the beginning of the summer. Parents and children are encouraged to check with their local libraries for start dates.

Blaine spoke to children gathered in the reading room of the Brooklyn Public Library Park Slope Library, the very room where he first developed a love of magic.

"My Mom was on her own and had to work several jobs, so I came here and read about Houdini and other magicians. In this library, I got lost in the world of books and developed a love for magic," said the world-famous magician. "I can tell you from my life's experience: Books are a treasure and the library is truly a magical place."

"In New York City, we will launch another wonderful year of Summer Reading on June 8," said Susan Kent, Director and Chief Executive of the Branch Libraries for the New York Public Library. "Each year thousands of New York youngsters benefit from reading over the summer by forging a lifelong relationship with books and improving their academic performance during the next school year."

"We love summertime and Summer Reading at Brooklyn Public Library," says Ginnie Cooper, Executive Director of Brooklyn Public Library. "Summer Reading is lots of fun and gives young people the skills they need to do well in school. This year, we hope to encourage even more kids, teens, and the littlest ones to read and spend their out-of-school time at their libraries."

"Every child and teen in New York City can have a magical summer by registering at the local public library. Summer reading unquestionably improves academic performance. Perhaps more important, it gives kids a chance to explore the world of reading for pleasure, to experiment with different kinds of books and follow wherever their interests take them. It stays with them for life," said Thomas W. Galante, Library Director, Queens Library.

Books: A Treasure! is funded with Federal Library Services and Technology Act funds, awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.
