The bulk of this collection of photographs was taken in 1950 during filming of "The Red Badge of Courage," with John Huston directing. The movie was shot on location at director John Huston's San Fernando Valley ranch. The New Yorker writer Lillian Ross shot many of the images researching long article, "Onward and Upward with the Arts: No. 1512," was published in parts from May 24 through June 21, 1952.
The photographs are of Huston directing, scenes of action during rehearsal, and of cast and crew members.
There are portraits of movie executives such as L. B. Mayer and producer Gottfried Reinhardt, and family and friends.
Other, unrelated to the film, are of the actors Charles Chaplin and Humphrey Bogart.
