Using the Collections: Avenues of Access

Located in the heart of the Lincoln Center complex on Manhattan's Upper West Side, the Circulating Collections are housed on the first and second floors of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. All materials, except reference items, may be borrowed with a New York Public Library borrower's card.

Access to Materials and Electronic Resources
Users can search LEO, the online catalog of The New York Public Library's Branch Libraries the online catalog of The New York Public Library's Branch Libraries from on-site computer workstations, or access LEO remotely from home, office, or school through a computer with Internet access. Entries are listed under author, title, and general subject area, and follow the Dewey decimal classification system.

Other available electronic resources include databases, online newspapers and journals, directories, and encyclopedias, which can be accessed through the Library's website, as well as a host of performing arts resources selected by the staff from those available on the Internet.

Access to the Internet is available on the 1st floor opposite the Circulation Desk.

Borrowing Materials
Users with a New York Public Library borrower's card may check out circulating materials at the Circulation Desk near the Lincoln Center Plaza entrance. Borrower's cards are issued at this desk, free of charge, upon presentation of identification listing name and current address, to anyone who lives, works, or attends school in New York State. Nonresidents may purchase a card for $100 per year. Library Cards.

Loan Periods
Loan periods for circulating materials are 3 weeks for books, CDs, and most music scores, and 1 week for videos and DVDs. Fines for overdue materials are $1.00 per day for overdue videos and DVDs, and 20 cents per day for all other items.

Reserving Materials
Up to 15 items can be reserved and sent to any local branch of The New York Public Library. After finding your item in LEO, the online catalog, select REQUEST ITEM, enter your barcode, then your PIN. It is only possible to reserve titles in the catalog that have circulating copies available or on order. The staff can assist you in getting started. How do you reserve a book?

Renewing Materials
Library materials may be renewed in person, by phone, or online. Call LEOLine: (212) 262-7444 24 hours a day to renew library materials, find out what items you have on loan, cancel holds, and find out your total fines. Be sure to have your library card ready when you call. For online renewals 24 hours a day, visit LEO on the Library's homepage (http://www.nypl.org/). In person renewals can be done at any branch during regular hours. How do you renew a book?

Copying Materials
Self service copy machines are located on the first and second floors. Special vending machines, adjacent to the copiers, dispense cards that may be inserted into the copy machines to produce multiple copies at a discount.

Telephone Assistance
The collections' professional staff can answer brief reference questions. Upon request on weekdays, they can verify if up to two items are available for circulation and put them on hold for up to 24 hours.
